To Find and Define the True Martial Art!
Defining the Martial Arts
The following data is applicable to all arts: Aikido, Kenpo, MMA, Kung Fu, whatever. Simply, it doesn’t matter what martial art you study, to be successful, to reach the pinnacle of your discipline, you must do the following.
1) Realize that you are an ‘I am.’ Know that you are a spiritual entity.
2) Create space. Do not generate staticky thoughts.
3) Focus your awareness on one thing. Learn to concentrate awareness, and you will find unlimited abilities.
4) Do not be positive in your action, do not be negative. Simply maintain distance and learn to be aware in the middle of chaos.
5) Realize that: For something to be true, the opposite must also be true. This defines the universe as a motor, and everything in the universe as individual motors.
6) Understand that you are not the screen for the universe, but rather the projector. The universe does what it does in response to your specific thoughts.
7) Treat others as you would be treated yourself. Recognize them as spiritual entities, help them learn to create space, and all the other items of this missive.
8) Practice your discipline every day. No matter if it is Kenpo, Karate, Krav Maga, or whatever, practice, and use that practice to focus the points of this missive.
9) Align yourself. Align your body with the physics of the universe, align your mind so that there is never contention, either from within or without, and then you will succeed.
10) Always step outside of your established patterns; find the ‘new you’ by refusing to do the same old same old; seek new methods, new ways of thinking, new everything.
And, it goes without saying, that the true art will manifest quicker if you are studying a matrixed martial art, or are matrixing your martial art.

Tiger and Butterfly Martial Arts Book
The new Martial Arts book is called
‘Tiger and Butterfly,’
and it’s pretty darned good.
If you look at the title,
and you have done any matrixing,
then you can see that I have used
portions of the Matrix Karate course,
and portions of the Shaolin Butterfly.
This was interesting,
because I didn’t want to fall into the trap
of having systems disagree.
I wanted the concepts to build on each other,
not work against each other.
In a way,
there is a certain similarity
between Tiger and Butterfly
and the MCMAP books I wrote.
The similarity is in the arrangement of material.
This had to be,
because when you make a system,
certain things have to be done,
certain rules have to be followed,
certain principles have to be included,
and all the way up the belt levels.
One of the reasons I wrote this book
is because I visited a few schools,
and I saw how the modern schools
have let forms and techniques fall by the way.
They work on freestyle,
The students get better,
but they can’t do certain things.
they don’t understand how to take a punch.
they have limited knowledge
concerning what happens
when you complete the circle (cycle) of a technique.
The system has eight belts,
There are no degrees.
Each belt is designed to be done
in about three months.
Brown belt might take longer,
but the material on the brown level
is pretty advanced.
the student will have those liquid kicks,
those floating kicks that look so light,
but knock down a elephant.
They should be able to take any kind of a punch.
They will be able to freestyle with authority,
and make a grab art out of any technique.
They will have knowledge.
Not just the fast reflexes of freestyle,
but a complete body knowledge,
how the body is constructed,
how to tweak it for more energy,
how to construct it for total effectiveness.
I want you to think about something.
When you study matrixing,
there are several courses,
and I recommend that you do them all,
that you get the complete picture,
from striking to locking
to guiding to manipulating
to predicting to taking down…
I can’t reach everybody,
and some people don’t understand
just how big the martial arts are,
and that you have to understand them as a science.
They are locked in ‘hit and punch,’
‘ground and pound,’
and don’t see or understand the bigger picture.
This book is for those people.
Hopefully it will get them excited for the big picture.
But even if it doesn’t,
it will afford a massive education,
and do a lot towards bringing these people
who are studying arts that have degraded over time
into the real art.
They will appreciate it as science.
even if they don’t,
if they do the book,
not just read it and say…
‘oh, I knew that,’
‘we have that in our system,’
but actually do the book,
all the drills and techniques,
all the forms and fighting drills,
then they will be doing the true art.
Whether they were stupid and didn’t even understand
what I am talking about,
if they do the drills and exercises,
they will end up doing the true art.
at a certain point,
a certain belt,
I teach a type of kick.
It’s a floating kick,
then you turn the hips over and slam the energy
down into the ground
as you strike.
The point is…
you can’t do that kick
unless you use the tan tien
in a certain way.
You simply can’t.
So they will practice it,
and stumble over the concept,
whether they understand what is happening or not,
and they will end up with classical power
in a certain mode.
And the whole system is constructed
so that one mode leads to the next.

Evolve a Thousand Years in One hour
The Martial Arts, and Evolution…
Speaking of matrixing, the martial arts, and evolution…
I came across an interesting thought
the other day
I was reading some old yogic scrolls,
and the claim was made
that an hour of yoga
caused a thousand years of evolution
in the person doing the yoga.
it’s not right,
though it does act like it is right.
when you evolve,
you are not growing,
you are reclaiming yourself.
So it’s true,
Which brings us to Matrixing.
When you study a martial art
that has been matrixed,
the art is logical,
and therefore the you accept it.
you like things to make sense,
to be logical.
when you matrix a martial art
you accept this logical method
of looking at and handling the world
at a much faster rate.
The difference between studying a martial art,
and matrixing it
(making it logical through your own efforts)
is the difference between driving a car
and building a car.
The fellow who builds the car
will understand that car far better
than the fellow who simply drives it.
in the end,
you get to where you are going.
But the fellow who makes his own vehicle
in the end,
get there faster.
there are several things that will happen,
as you matrix,
that will occur.
I don’t think I have ever laid out these results,
described this path,
so here goes…
you will tend to look at the world in a logical manner.
You will become better at solving problems.
You will become a better worker and boss.
You will become an artist.
Everybody sort of knows this,
most martial artists experience this,
so let me take you where most people don’t know.
you must put aside emotion.
This is an interesting thing.
People will put emotion on you,
and you will feel the need to respond with emotion.
But the Neutronic definition of emotion:
emotion is motion inside the head.
you must still the emotion,
stop the motion inside your head,
and not respond with emotion,
there is good emotion,
love, happiness, etc.
And there is bad emotion,
hate, fear, sadness, etc.
So the specific emotion you must not respond to
is the bad emotion.
Good emotion okay.
Bad emotion you must uncreate from even beginning.
Think about it,
emotion is merely the automatic response
of one who is overwhelmed.
You must not become overwhelmed,
you must view the world in logical terms,
so that nothing can surprise you,
nothing can overwhelm you.
you must defeat the distraction of memories.
You must not respond because any conditioning
you may have received.
This includes any familial conditioning,
any educational conditioning,
any conditioning of any kind.
you must create yourself in the moment.
your father laughed at certain types of jokes before you,
do you laugh at the same kind of jokes?
Don’t you realize that he laughed at jokes in his moment?
And that you have an entirely different moment?
That will change the type of jokes you might laugh at.
school might train you to think like a physicist,
and you will analyze the world as a physicist,
when you should analyze it as a unique being,
not trapped by an education.
(Mind, I am not saying you can’t be a physicist
and be in the moment, too)
do you view the world through a religious viewpoint?
It would be much better
to study all religions,
to understand all religions,
than to choose one religion over all others.
Don’t become the only thing in the universe
willing to kill over a belief system.
This is simple after you have evolved a few hours…
you must separate yourself from other people,
without losing your humanity.
you must be immune to the attitudes
of your fellow man,
but you must love your fellow man
all the same.
This one is incredibly tough.
No matter how far you evolve,
there will always be some idiot
telling you what to do,
thinking he is smarter than you,
and so on.
Can you accept and even use this fellow?
And put aside your certainty
that he is an idiot?
Interesting problem, eh?
and this one is a toughie,
don’t view the world as a fantasy.
This is probably the toughest,
for you become enlightened through the things
I have previously mentioned,
then you might think that,
because you are so smart,
the world should be as you say.
you make a battery powered car,
to save the world from pollutants,
and don’t ever consider
that someday the battery will have to be disposed of,
and that the battery might be worse
than all the oil pollutants of a gas car.
this is one of the most dangerous things
you will ever to confront
on your way to self-sufficiency
as a spiritual being…
on your way to your ultimate evolution…
on the way to the ultimate truth of yourself.
Though people haven’t discovered
the earlier truths,
they don’t know how to look at the world logically,
or control their emotion,
or control their responses to people,
they will still try to rule the world through their fantasy.
Have you ever met a fellow without an opinion?
And yet I am asking you to be one.
Toughest problem you will ever encounter.
this is the truth of matrixing
and where it leads to.
you learn to look at the world logically
through the matrixing method.
You put aside the distraction of memories,
then you put aside emotion,
other people’s thoughts,
and even fantasy.
Then you find the truth of yourself,
and you start manipulating the universe
the way it should be manipulated.
The truly odd thing is that this path
often starts with a simple motivation:
the desire to defend yourself.
The wish to become physically safe
through simple exercises and drills.
Where this path leads,
the one caution:
People think they can do this through any martial art.
Yet nobody has ever succeeded.
the people who think they have
are merely manifesting their fantasy of the world.
They are still mired in the muck,
and don’t understand that they have no logic.
They have only the fantasy of logic.
They have only an opinion and no facts.
So it has to be a matrixed martial art.
It can’t be a Chinese fire drill of a martial art,
it has to be a logical (matrixed) martial art.
Then it will work,
and then you can experience something like…
a thousand years of evolution
through a simple hour of exercise.
Matrix Karate starts the matrixing process.
Study the courses as you need to,
until logic outweighs fantasy in your mind.
Then you will be off and running.
But whatever you do…
don’t settle for an opinion.

Jeet Kune Do Training Manual!
The Martial Arts of Bruce Lee Revealed!
The name of the book is ‘Bruce Lee, Jeet Kune Do, and Neutronics.’
Written by Al Case, a martial artist with near fifty years experience in the martial arts, this book takes an outside viewpoint of Bruce Lee, and his martial art (Jeet Kune Do).
Bruce Lee is often considered, specifically as to what drove him to his martial arts theories. The main focus of the book, however, is to compare and contrast Jeet Kune Do to the more classical martial arts, specifically, the author’s art of Karate.
This is a hard core book. While it is respectful, it is obvious that the author holds Mr. Lee in high esteem, there are some very hard questions asked concerning the formation of JKD, and the real purpose of the art.
It is also an intelligent book, going into Matrixing Technology, which is the first and only science of the martial arts, and Neutronic philosophy. The author claims that because JKD is an advanced martial art only advanced methods of thought can be used to analyze it.
Which is to say that if you are Beeavis or Butthead, you may want to avoid this tome. It won’t teach you Jeet Kune Do, and it may hurt your head to actually start thinking about it.
Mr. Case has, as said, near 50 years martial arts experience. He began Kenpo Karate in 1967, quickly became an instructor, and went on to study virtually every martial art that came down the pike during the Golden Age of Martial Arts. He became a writer for the magazines in 1981, and had his own column in Inside Karate. Thus, Mr. Case doesn’t enter the picture as a newbie, but an experienced fighter and writer. His compare and contrast with JKD should provide the most enlightened student with much thought.

Think and It Shall Happen…Through the Martial Arts!
The Power of Mind over Matter…
May the force be with you. Did the Egyptians levitate those pyramidal building blocks with their minds? I wanna have the power of mind over matter!
Hey, who doesn’t. The problem is, you don’t see anybody else who has it, either. Even the bible, translated through seventy different special interest groups, is not entirely believable when it comes to matters of the mind over matter.
That said, the first stage in learning how to have powers of mind over matter is to learn that the body is a machine. This can be done through many different methods, but the best one I have found is good old martial arts. You have to translate a lot of stuff into physics, and there is a lot of bushwah out there, but if you stick to the empirical method you can actually isolate True Martial Arts.
The second stage is learning how to use the mind. The first stage, in teaching you that the body is a machine, opens up the mind, but most people misunderstand what has happened. They think they have to build their bodies more, when, at a certain point, they have to use their bodies less, and energy less, and let their mental powers transcend any desire for physicality.
The third stage, interesting enough, deals with an analysis of flow, such as in Aikido, or Pa Kua, or others of the soft arts. Once flow is mastered, the third stage starts to manifest, and this is a stage of imagination. Can you make people back away from you just by looking at them, can you fall somebody down with your intent, as opposed to actually touching them.
The fourth stage is going to be available after you have achieved the abilities I’ve just described. This is going to be where you make stones levitate. Can you take imagination and make the things of the world do what you want them to do?
Can you imagine a stone lifting, and it lifts solely through your imagination? This is not muscle, and is, in fact, in a direction opposite to muscle. Though, remember, it is necessary on the first stage.
The real key is in understanding, not in mysticism, for mysticism is the fact of words and concepts not really being understood and therefore not really usable. The real key is in running imagination through your body on the lower levels, and then being able to manifest that imagination outside your body. Of course, at this point, you should probably find a workable method for isolating the exact physics of The True Martial Arts.

The Zen Simplicity of Martial Arts
To Be or Not to Be Martial Arts Style
To the beginner the martial arts, and this includes Karate, Kung Fu, Aikido, Tai Chi Chuan, and all other martial disciplines, can be less than simple. There is simply an overwhelm of information, a ‘disgruntlement’ of the mind at the massive influx of new materials.
The simple truth, however, is that the truth is simple.
Why these subjects, be they karate or jujitsu or whatever, would not be simple, once once absorbed, is merely the result of engaging the mind to try and describe what is ‘not mind.’
For instance, in the beginning one must wade through instructions concerning physics, anatomy, history, philosophy, and so on. This is made more complex as different arts propose different structure and on many levels, and then often disagree.
The harmony of Aikido is similar to the absorption of Tai Chi Chuan, but there is sufficient difference to argue the terminology.
The striking methods of Wing Chun and boxing, though at heart still just a strike, can be argued ad infinitum.
But in the end, proven by simple and direct experience, a human being is constructed of flesh (body), mind (memories), and spirit (awareness). Thus, all physics, which is the heart of all sciences, can be rendered to a fine simplicity.
The fact is that the discipline of the martial arts focuses on doing to the exclusion of the mind, and thus is achieved enlightenment. Enlightenment is considered, from the unique viewpoint of an accomplished martial arts discipline, to be aware of the self as awareness.
And, yes, the above statement, so simple, is the summation that can be applied on any and all levels of all martial arts.
To do a single act, a kata or technique, a kick or throw, until there is no thought (no interference from the mind), and is intuitive, opens the door to enlightenment.
For once one looks at a fist approaching the face in terms of simple survival, one will begin to look at the approach of the universe in the same way.
Not an overwhelm of factors to be adjusted through eternal tweakings of computations, but a simple ‘Is it going to hit me or not.’
Followed by a simple, ‘Do I block or get out of the way.’
Not complex at all.
The unfortunate truth, however, is that man insists on his own significance in the universe by creating endless paradigm for his actions.
Thus we have reasons of physics, disagreements of anatomy, descriptions of philosophy, and all filtered through the various misunderstandings inherent in unaccomplished and divergent martial arts.
And these are all justifications for one’s existence.
‘To be or not to be,’ placed in endless loop.
But the simple truth is if one practices the discipline, and this of widely varied arts such as Karate or Aikido,Tai Chi Chuan or Kenpo, then one is engaged in ignoring the mind; one is functioning in an emptiness of reason and a purity of awareness.
Survival blots out psychological ramifications, and puts an end to philosophical meanderings – and justifications – of the awareness trying to look at itself, but so very unable.
To sum, it is not all the reasons, but the source of reason, the ‘I am,’ that is responsible for conundrum, and the resolution therewith.
The easiest way to cut through the fog of the martial arts, to ignore the mind and to find the truth of the self, is through the logic of matrixing. To matrix the martial arts is to rid the art of silly significance, and to place all the elements and pieces in the correct and easily assimilate-able order.

What Kind of Snakes You Should Kill at Monkeyland?
Up here at Monkeyland…
…snakes are God’s Critters, and you have to be careful which ones you kill.
Rattlesnakes you kill. They have triangular heads, precise diamond markings on their back, and rattles on the tip of their tails.
I killed one yesterday. Didn’t have a gun with snake shot (a bullet with little bee bee shot), or even a knife. So I laid a board across it’s neck and beat the head off with a stick.
If I didn’t, it would kill my dog, or cause the cows to run and break legs, or whatever.
Sorry, tree huggers, I love nature, but I live in a place where nature doesn’t always love me.
A bull snake you don’t kill. They look a bit like a rattler, which causes mistakes, but they don’t have rattles. I killed one the first time I saw it, out of panic, then found out I had made a grievous error. Grievous because bullsnakes will kill rattlers. Yikes! He was my friend!
Garter snakes are totally harmless. Long and skinny, with yellow lines running the length of their bodies.
And so on.
And, I saw a six foot rattler, with 9 beads on its tail, crawling into a hole in the dam. It was going after ground squirrels.
So, do I kill it? The ground squirrels are destroying the damn, which is vital for the cows during the summer. So a bad guy is doing me a favor. Do I kill it?
Unfortunately, yes. Measure the good v the bad, and make a decision. And that’s life up here at Monkeyland.

The Sin of Martial Arts Pride
My martial arts hubris, and how I overcame it

In my other articles I started that my original karate dojo may have been the best thing that ever happened to me. If you haven’t read them you might find them interesting, especially the ones on Dojo-kun and Do vs Jitsu.
Among other things that I rarely see in other schools, each belt test consisted of kata, punching and kicking, hojo-undo etc, but they also included reading a book and a verbal book report. The very first test was, like many styles, a yellow belt. I will never understand having a rainbow of colors that DON’T get darker as they go…
That first test was quite an eye opener for me though, Sensei had added his own requirement, because he was not about making money, nor was he interested in having half-hearted students, nor students that would leave. He wanted people that were going to forever be changed, and continue to practice for the rest of their lives.
The requirement he added? Go to another martial arts school, and take a minimum of one class with them. Give a verbal report.
This requirement, was a bit baffling, why take anyone just starting in your school, and require them to go try another school and possibly lose them? Because it makes sure you are in the art that you will stick with.
For my yellow belt test, I took a 3 day introductory course to Tai-Chi, knowing nothing about any other martial art I made the mistake to trying to compare it to what I knew. To give you some idea of what kind of apples and broccoli I was trying to compare, I was taking Pangainoon, and the first form you learn is Sanchin and the school I went to was doing Yang Tai Chi.
I made all sorts of uninformed, biased assumptions, I loved karate with a blind passion, and wanted to impress upon my sensei how much karate meant to me. Thus I took the classes looking for what I perceived to be flaws and weaknesses in the art such as
* no application of technique – never did I get any instruction of “this is a block, this is a strike, this is what you are defending against”
* the stance was too wide – I was not given any explanation for a neutral bow, or why it would be a good stance. In my mind Sanchin was the ultimate fighting stance.
* No power in their techniques – I had no understanding of chi power, even though Pangainoon teaches it, I hadn’t really even gotten an introduction.
I wilfully and with eyes open wide walked into a trap that ensares so many others. I blinded myself to the benefits of other arts.
I was lucky that I didn’t entirely discount everything I learned. I continued to keep in contact with the Sifu, and shortly before he left for China, I had the opportunity to witness him do Tai-chi very fast, it was amazing. Suddenly all the soft flowery techniques appeared to have power, and were obvious as to blocks and strikes. At this point, I had also had enough Pangainoon to understand some of the techniques and chi.
I was lucky for many reasons, I was lucky that my Sensei had the confidence to send us other places. I was lucky that I choose a school that was so different that I was forced to re-evaluate what I was learning (even if it was only in the back of my mind).
Luck aside, my own belief that my karate style was the only “good” style, quickly crumbling down. I wouldn’t have been able to overcome this false pride, had I not had these opportunities.
If you run a school, you will do your students a massive favor if you encourage them to go practice with other schools.
If you are a martial artist of any style, you can benefit from swallowing your ego and practising at other schools, especially those that are radically different than yours. For example, if you do Tai-chi, you might want to try a boxing school, if you do Wing Chun, try Judo or Jujitsu, etc.
You never know, you might might new friends, you might learn something new. As I often say “more bodies, means more opportunity to learn, especially when they are doing something other than you are doing”.

About the Monkeyland Survival Book…

I remembered writing a Martial Arts article
back in the nineties,
and my editor actually added some stuff to it.
he almost always
let my stuff slip through as written,
but this article mentioned the second amendment.
Did you know I was once kicked out of an airport
for carrying a kubotan?
A friggin’ keychain!
And, not as deadly as a sharpened pencil
if you happen to know how to use a sharpened pencil,
which I do.
But it got me ticked,
so I wrote the article,
and it was all on
the Department of Martial Arts.
With all the laws passed to get rid of guns,
the point was that it was only a matter of time
before laws were passed
to get rid of martial arts.
You think not?
I once taught a fellow from the Soviet Union area,
and he was prohibited from studying martial arts.
Martial Arts were ONLY for police
and the sons of politicians.
The sons of politicians.
Can anybody spell ‘Al Gore Junior?’
I thought this whole thing sort of silly,
until I ran into those kinds of experiences,
and realized how badly
our government has been abused.
this morning I was thinking about it,
and I started laughing.
Did you know it is legal to carry a hammer down the street?
Do you know how much damage
you can do to somebody
with a balpeen hammer?
you can put it in your belt,
walk into a police station with it,
twirl it around,
and nobody will even blink.
now that we’re talking about it,
you can carry a handful of REALLY sharp nails in your fist.
Take out an eyeball with that one,
really feeling ballsy?
You can walk down the street with an ax.
And if anybody stops you,
you just say,
I’m on the way to a job,
I’m going to my brother’s house.
What are they going to do?
Ban building tools?
Close down Home Depot?
in this day and age
with things like nun chuck and sickles
on the endangered species list
nobody has started a martial art on farm tools.
I was just thinking.
I hope you are, too.
Life’s too short not to think,
that all said,
I should mention

This is the stuff we went through,
and it is hard core…fun.
Because when you stop yelling at the TV for lying,
when you get out away from the government that tells you not to do anything…
WHEN YOU GET OFF YOUR ASS AND DO SOMETHING!
Then you are having fun.
You may not know it at the time…
but it is the time you will remember all your life.
It is the time you stepped up and did the job.

I just want to say a quick something.
Martial Arts are about survival,
and that means all kinds of survival.
Did you know that Mas Oyama went into the mountains
and trained in the freezing snow
for two years.
Did you know that Morihei Ueshiba,
went to northern Japan,
isolated himself in a farming community
for several years?
It’s all part of surviving,
of finding out who you are and what you can do.
I don’t expect everybody to run screaming into the hills,
but you should at least have an idea
of how to survive beyond your forms and techniques.
